Effect of Functional Barley BARLEYMAX (Tantangara) on Intestinal Regulation: A Double Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Parallel Group Comparison Clinical Study.

This double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical study tested the effect of consuming 12 g/day of BARLEYMAX (Tantangara) – provided via cereal bars – over four weeks in 28 adult women with a tendency toward constipation. Researchers measured stool output, defecation frequency, short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) levels in stool, gut microbiota composition, and breath hydrogen as markers of fermentation.

After the intervention, the BARLEYMAX® group showed a significant increase in stool output and defecation frequency compared with the placebo group. SCFA production was elevated, indicating enhanced gut fermentation; the relative abundance of the beneficial genus Bacteroides increased, while the abundance of Clostridium subcluster XIVa decreased. These findings suggest that a modest daily serving of BARLEYMAX® supports intestinal regulation – improving regularity in people with constipation and promoting favourable changes in gut-microbial activity and fermentation.
